Chapter Nineteen

We all held our guns as we walked down the path toward the cabin where Jude and Luke had brought the injured employee. No one was outside, but they looked at us through their cabin windows. Their big worried eyes glowing in the darkness of their cabins was an eerie sight.

We’d brought a first aid kit, but I didn’t even know what we were going to find once inside the room.

Jude opened the door, and I instantly covered my mouth.

“There wasn’t anything we could do,” a guy said, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “He was too hurt. We shouldn’t have even brought him back.”

There was an unmoving body stretched out on the bed. His arms and legs flopped in every direction. It looked as though the blood had soaked through the mattress and dripped onto the floor.

“Let’s get you guys into another cabin,” Jude said waving at them to follow.

“Thank God,” the girl who had been standing in the corner said. Her hands were covered in blood, and her entire body trembled.

Jude closed the door and led the way to the next cabin. We all stepped inside.

“Better,” the girl said looking frail as she wrapped her arms around herself and sat down on one of the beds.

“So,” Jude said clearing his throat. “Why were you all coming here?”

The guy with glasses stepped forward. His arms were straight at his sides, and his shoulders were back.

“We're your employees, sir. Ready to work.”

“We’re taking the rest of the day off,” Jude said trying to hide the fact he was shaking his head. “We didn’t know more were coming.”

“There might be another group in training right now,” the guy with glasses said glancing at the girl, but she just shrugged. The guy’s shoulders slumped down. “We lost a lot from our group, didn’t we?”

Jude exhaled slowly. “You did. You three were the only ones to make it back.”

“Two now.” The girl corrected.

“What are your names?” Jude asked.

“Lauren,” she said rubbing her elbow. “I run and repair the apheresis machines.”

Nate’s eyes shifted to Jude for a split second.

“I’m John. Greenhouse.”

“How hurt are you?” I asked gesturing toward John’s blood-soaked shirt.

He smiled at me. “Just a scratch.”

“Can I see?” I asked.

John removed his shirt. My mouth dropped open, and John looked down.

“Oh,” he said wobbling slightly. “Worse than I thought.”

There were three deep marks cut into his arm as if he’d been clawed. One of the wounds looked significant.

“Let’s clean and bandage it,” I said setting down the first aid kit on the nightstand by the bed. “Sit down.”

Nate walked over to help me. He pulled on some rubber gloves and took the antibiotic cream out of my hands.

“Get the bandage ready,” Nate said. “How about you Lauren? Any injuries?”

“Well, I landed on a rock when I tripped and fell. I think it’s just going to bruise though,” Lauren said lifting her shirt a bit. There was a circular black and blue mark on her lower rib. She touched it with her fingertip.
